10. HMRC fraud prevention data

When you connect to HMRC, or use Figurs to talk to HMRC for Making Tax Digital VAT (for example to fetch your VAT obligations or submit a VAT return), HMRC requires us to send it information about the device and connection you are using. We send this with every VAT request made on your behalf.

10.1 What we send to HMRC

  • Connection: your public IP address, the port your connection used, and the time we captured them
  • Device identifier: a random identifier stored in a cookie on your browser (see our Cookie Policy)
  • Browser: screen size (width, height, scaling factor and colour depth), browser window size, your time zone as an offset from UTC, and your browser user agent
  • Two-factor sign-in: the type of two-factor check you completed (authenticator code or other), the time you completed it, and a one-way hashed reference. We never send the code or your authenticator secret
  • Your identity in Figurs: your Figurs sign-in email address and your internal Figurs user ID. HMRC's specification requires the identifier you sign in with
  • Licence reference: a one-way hashed reference derived from your company's internal Figurs ID, not the ID itself
  • Figurs details: the Figurs product name and version, the public IP address of our server, and that the connection is made through our server

10.2 Why we send it

The legal basis is legal obligation (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(c)). Regulation 3 of The Taxes (Delivery of Information Through Software) (Ancillary Metadata) Regulations 2019 (SI 2019/360) requires software that sends information to HMRC to send this data as well, so that HMRC can detect and prevent fraud.

10.3 How long it is kept
